Another effect of road closures

The annual Idyllwild 5K and 10K Run and Fitness Walk is usually the second Saturday of June. However the 2019 event has been postponed until Saturday, Aug. 24.
Race managers posted on the website, “With highways 243 from Banning and 79 from Hemet under construction, anyone coming to the event from north or northeast of Idyllwild for a June event would find their commute at least an hour longer than normal …With these unique road conditions, rather than set the race for the usual second weekend in June, we will hold the event on Saturday, August 24.”
More than a third of race participants come from Hemet, San Jacinto and Moreno Valley, according to Idyllwild School Principal Matt Kraemer. The closures would likely affect the number of race participants.
“Otherwise everything else will be the same,” Kraemer said.
Since the new school year will begin Aug. 12, Kraemer is hoping that the later date might attract more participants from the schools.
Highway 74 from Hemet should be open at that time, they hope.
