The longest-running, community-wide sporting event on the hill — the annual 5K/10K Run Walk — will be on Saturday, Aug. 24. The Idyllwild Race Committee moved the event from its early June date to Aug. 24 due to the limited Highway 74 pilot car hours at that time.
The start times are 5K at 7:15 a.m., 10K at 8 a.m. and half-mile Kids’ Run (7 years old and under) at 9:15 a.m.
The Idyllwild School PTA will cook a pancake breakfast at Town Hall from 8 to 10 a.m.
This event raises money for the Idyllwild School’s physical education program. After more than 35 years, and thanks to the support of contributions from many of our local merchants, the race has raised more than $70,000.
The Idyllwild Race Committee, a nonprofit organization, plans and organizes the race. Darren McKay, Idyllwild School’s physical education teacher, is the committee chair. Matt Kramer, the school’s principal, is a committee member. Mountain Community Patrol provides the traffic control on the day of the race. Idyllwild Fire Protection District is present for emergency support. Committee member Chip Schelly will be the emcee.
Participants will receive a custom designed long-sleeve event t-shirt. The committee hopes to get 300-400 participants. In past years, the race has always drawn a good mix of young and older participants, locals and those from off the hill. There will be awards for age groups. All of the participants in the Kids’ Run receive an award at the finish line.
Please support this important event for our community by entering one of the races, inviting friends from off the hill to sign up, or just by showing up to cheer on the racers and walkers.
