The daughter of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., a celebrity teen coach, and a professional drummer will highlight the motivational lineup of speakers set for the Riverside County Student Unity Conference on Tuesday, Oct. 29, at the Riverside Convention Center, 3637 5th Street, Riverside.
“The Student Unity Conference is for students who are interested in unlocking the potential in themselves and bringing out the best in everybody around them,” said Riverside County Superintendent Dr. Judy D. White. “We are stronger when we focus on what unites us instead of what divides us, and this free conference is perfect for students who want to be the change in their world.”
The event is free and only open to students attending public high schools in Riverside County. Interested students already needed to inquire with their school counselor or principal about the limited number of seats available to each public high school.
Keynote speakers
Dr. Bernice A. King is chief executive officer of Martin Luther King Jr. Center for Nonviolence and founder of Be a King. King is also author of “Hard Questions, Heart Answers.” Through her work at The King Center, King educates youth and adults about the nonviolent principles modeled by her parents.
As part of the center’s Nonviolence 365 education and training initiative, she launched Students with King, which enables students to interact with King family members, as well as those who knew and/or worked with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Mrs. Coretta Scott King.
King is an innovative, energetic, and committed leader dedicated to taking her parents’ legacy and teachings, The King Center, and the work of creating a more peaceful, just, human world with Nonviolence 365 into a new era.
The Celebrity Teen Coach Jesse LeBeau is another featured speaker. In life, we all face hardships, challenges, and road blocks at times. A perpetual underdog himself, LeBeau offers a unique perspective on why suffering, when viewed through the correct lens, can become the biggest strength and greatest asset. LeBeau’s highly entertaining and interactive style creates an engaging experience helping students to understand how their unique personal story is their greatest untapped resource. Students will learn how to build stronger relationships, achieve goals, and increase productivity, all while building trust and having a deeper positive impact on others.
Clint Pulver — motivational speaker, professional drummer, actor, and pilot — will present The Significant Student Leader: How to Live Life By Design.
“It’s not about being the best in school,” says Pulver. “It’s about being the best FOR the school.” In this entertaining and incredibly impactful keynote address, Pulver explains that there is a difference between being a successful student leader and a significant student leader. He will provide actionable steps on how to achieve the best in others and become a significant student leader. Pulver will share powerful stories that help students discover their passions, get specific on goals, and learn how to identify their purpose in life. He will reveal that the secret is learning how to live a life by design, not by default, and that the choices made today will plant the seed for tomorrow’s opportunities.
In addition to the keynote speakers, multiple breakout sessions will be available for students to learn from subject matter experts in the areas of:
• Kindness, character, and relationships
• Leadership and storytelling
• Surviving homelessness
• Teamwork and the power of listening
• Building mental and emotional wellness
• Promoting positive change through civic engagement
