According to CHP Officer Matt Napier, at approximately 2:45 a.m. on March 22, Elena Galo Santillan, 51 of Calexico, was driving a black 2009 Chevrolet Malibu westbound on Highway 74 near Devils Ladder Road when she fell asleep at the wheel.
Her vehicle drifted to the right through the intersection and collided with an electrical communications box. Her vehicle continued moving also colliding with a traffic sign, a post and a wood fence on private property.
After the collision, Santillan reversed and fled the scene in her vehicle. Her front license plate was left at the scene, allowing CHP to find her address and contact Santillan who admitted to falling asleep at the wheel. No one was injured in the incident.
