Last week in “Days of Our Nine Lives,” ARF cats met ARF’s two newest kittens.

Sadie: Let me guess … the kittens were adopted.

Whiskers: Easy come, easy go.

Pepper: Holy catnip! Kittens certainly don’t last long around here.

Sadie: So, is it safe to say that ARF now has no kittens and no dogs?

Pepper: That’s what I understand. Things will be very quiet now, except for this weekend’s yard sale.

Whiskers: Hey guys, I heard something recently that I must talk about.

Pepper: Sounds serious. What is it?

Whiskers: I heard an ARF human telling the others that she witnessed an all-too-common sight the other day. She was driving through town and she saw a big dog on a leash hopping from foot to foot.

Pepper: Oh no! Were his feet burning?

Whiskers: Clearly, they were and his humans weren’t noticing his pain. She turned her car around to go alert them, but fortunately they were putting him into their car.

Pepper: I think too often humans don’t stop to think that they can put their dogs in danger on hot or even warm days.

Whiskers: That’s right. If a human wouldn’t walk barefoot on the hot cement, they shouldn’t expect their dogs to, either.

Pepper: I’ve heard that humans should rest the backs of their hands on the cement for 10 seconds, and if it feels too warm, it’s probably too warm for a dog’s feet.

Whiskers: Sometimes I think the dog might prefer to be left at home where it might be more comfortable.

Pepper: This makes me kind of glad that cats don’t get walked on leashes very often.

Whiskers: But the same could happen to those that do!
