Snow play suggestion at
Nature Center

Dear editor:
Broken sleds and trash are cluttering the beautiful Idyllwild Nature Center this Friday morning. Imagine what it will look like Sunday night, thanks to posters directing snow players to this specific park.
Suggestions:
Rangers can work from the kiosk at the entrance on Highway 243 on snow play days to collect fees and educate people about caring for the park and using trash bins. This will make it easier to collect fees (versus standing inside the Nature Center building and calling out to folks from behind a table).
Only allow folk who’ve paid and heard the education talk to be able to park on the upper lot. Keep the bar down until they pay, and perhaps, limit the number of snow players in the park on a given day.
Staffing and funding are always problems but this is not working. The wild animals and environment deserve better.

Available State Farm and NFPA wildfire grants

Dear editor:
Having owned a home in Idyllwild for almost 30 years, I am no stranger to the threats of wildfires. For the eighth year in a row, State Farm is sponsoring National Wildfire Community Preparedness Day with the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) on May 1, 2021.
Funding will be provided for 150 projects in the amount of $500 each to cover expenses related to individual grassroots efforts. Activities can be coordinated by anyone (individuals, a small group, an entire neighborhood or a community-based organization) working to reduce wildfire risk, advance general wildfire preparedness, or minimize post-fire impacts from a recent wildfire. Applications are now open for the grants at https://www.nfpa.org/Public-Education/Fire-causes-and-risks/Wildfire/National-Wildfire-Community-Preparedness-Day.
