The competition was hot once again inside Buckhorn Camp’s Peace Center last Tuesday (Jan. 16) as we witnessed Forest Lumber win their second game of the season by defeated the Red Kettle 3 games to 1. It was a well-rounded match and everyone played well.

Tuesday’s other match was filled with excitement and anticipation as the two second-place teams went head-to-head: Village Hardware vs. BBI Construction, who was looking for their fifth straight win. Each game was a battle that went back and forth.

A fifth-game tie-breaker was needed as the match was tied 2-2. In the end, it was Village Hardware, led by the Fogle family, who got the last hard-fought points to snap BBI Construction’s winning-streak and win the match 3-2.

Thursday’s (Jan. 18) games brought what spectators deemed as “the best match of the year so far”: it was once again BBI Construction, but this time going against the Idyllwild Brewpub. Each game was close, and this match also needed a fifth-game tie-breaker to decide the winner.

After persevering a heavy attack, the underdogs Idyllwild Brewpub had a few tricks up their sleeves — and it was enough to defeat BBI Construction 3 games to 2.

Thursday’s other match showcased Idyllwild Garage who continues to have a hard grasp on first-place by defeating the Red Kettle 3-1.

Youth Basketball

Coach Mike Smith took on double duty as he coached both the 7-10 and the 11–14-year-old groups last Wednesday for the fourth session of Youth Basketball Camp. Coach Mike ran passing drills, lay-up drills, dribbling drills, and ended the day with a fun scrimmage game at the end.

These kids are showing positive signs of improvement on the basketball court. Only two more sessions until they graduate ICC’s Youth Basketball Camp, the next one being from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 24, at the Idyllwild School gym.

I may have given “the commentator’s curse” last week as we saw Team Red (Nunn) and Team White (Beagle) fall to their opponents and lost both their games last Wednesday, Jan. 17. Team Grey (Mabery) continues their stronghold on first-place by winning both of their games.

But look out for Team Blue (Smith) and Team Black (Posey). They are making a run for the top as both teams won 2 out of their 3 games Wednesday night. Both teams had solid performances on offense and defense.

Hopefully, I don’t pass “the commentator’s curse” onto them, as they both are proving to have a strong presence on the court.

Jan. 24’s games were highlighted with strong performances by Michael Smith, Kyle Owen and Carl Dewese of Team Blue (Smith) as their chemistry and teamwork attributed to winning all three of their games Wednesday night; they now have a nice edge on second place.

However, still in first place is Team Grey (Mabery) who continue to show dominance on the court with great rebounding by Sean O’ Keaffe, tricky no-look passing by Derek Murphy and excellent 3-point shooting skills by captain Jake Mabery.

Next week is the last series of games in the regular season, then playoffs on Feb. 7. Who will take it all and be crowned league champion? Stay tuned.
