Last night, Jan. 10, retired Crest Forest Fire Chief Mike Sherman agreed to become the interim Fire Chief for the Idyllwild Fire Protection District. He agreed to contract terms during the regular January commission meeting and the signed the contract after the meeting.

Robert Peek, State Park ranger, reported that park employees Eric Hanson and Diana Santiago, who had been dispatched to help locate two hikers lost on the Pacific Crest Trail near Wellman’s Divide, found the hikers and escorted them back to the Long Valley Ranger Station. Saturday afternoon, CAL FIRE, Station 23 and Helicopter 301 from Hemet-Ryan Air base, Idyllwild Fire Department and the Riverside Mountain Rescue Unit were rescued rock climbers off of Tahquitz Rock.
