One of Idyllwild’s funkiest landmarks, the Funky Bazaar, has reopened under new management. The whimsical and eclectic vision of the late Peter Buhl is still evident; same bright yellow building with a laughing Buddha in front, same three floors of nooks and crannies brimming with surprises.
“Peter created something magical here,” proprietor Michael Taylor shared. “The Bazaar has always been about creativity and curiosity, and our goal is to keep that spirit alive—while opening the doors to even more local makers, artists, and dreamers.”
The new Funky Bazaar is home to collections large and small. Certifed Funky Goods is a nod to Buhl’s sensibility, “bohemian trinkets, mystical oddities and artisan creations you didn’t know you needed.”
Diane Orr has brought her Wax Apothecary product line of handcrafted botanical candles and aromatherapy goods.
The Art Alliance of Idyllwild has come aboard with a Member gallery, “A kaleidoscope of creativity under the mountain sky…”
Helen Hixon of Mountain Pottery and former science teacher, is curating a “Wunderkammer” (cabinet of wonders) with trinkets, tools and specimens to ponder.
The Golden Pine Gallery, with its headquarters next to Café Aroma, has its own gallery to showcase “showcases bold abstract paintings, vibrant contemporary works, and creations that seem to buzz with mountain spirit.”
Tattoo Artist Shane Knight has moved his Sugar Pine Tattoo into the basement, and his studio is also a mini museum of curiosities including his own art.
Mid Mod Mojo is a time warp to mid century cool, vintage furniture, atomic-age décor, art and fashion, curated by Julia Quirke.
Shop Storyteller is the work of artist Eve Gradilla, who gathers handmade treasures that speak in textures, patterns and poetry.
Shiela Zacker’s Enchanted Art channels the artist’s creative magic through acrylics, resins, and mixed media, a portal into the imagination.
Crystal’s Mythical Garden, curated by Crystal Prado, is a metaphysical wonderland to awaken the senses and elevate the spirit.
The Caroling Company will have a limited seasonal pop-up shop of yuletide cheer.
The Buen Cacao will be bringing their edible art this December, hand crafted chocolate born in these mountains.
The Funky Bazaar has always felt like the heart of Idyllwild’s artistic oddball energy,” Taylor added. “We’re just helping that heart keep beating—louder and prouder than ever.”
