Jim Crandall, Palms to Pines Golf Association handicap chair, provided this report about the Friday, Jan. 18, golf tournament.

The club held its regular monthly tournament at the Woodhaven Country Club in Palm Desert.

The sign at the entry to the club reads, “Your Happy Day of Golf Begins Here.” And it’s true — most golfers arrive happy, imagining straight drives, skillful chips and miraculous putts. Of course, all that optimism can vanish if you slam your first drive over the fence and into traffic on Washington Street. (A note for non-golfers: you might want to avoid driving on Washington Street in the vicinity of the club during the daylight hours.)

Bill Sanborn (course handicap 26), was one of the happy ones. He took first place with a net 68, Robert Priefer (25) took second with a net 70, and Bob Stearns (23) took third with a net 71. There was a three-way tie for fourth between Jim Crandall (12), Lee Lanfried (20) and Bruce Marley (11), all with net 72s.

In the four closest-to-the-pin contests, Sanborn won on holes 3 and 12, Pete Capparelli won on hole 6, and Crandall won on hole 14.

Here are the current point standings for the 2012-2013 season.

Points are awarded at each tournament as follows: first place, 6 points; second place, 4 points; third place, 3 points; fourth place, 2 points; fifth place, 1 point. In addition, one-half point is awarded to everyone who participates.

The top eight point-finishers of the year go into match-play playoffs for the club championship in August, September and October. A member has to compete in at least five regular season tournaments and have a handicap no greater than 24.4 in order to qualify for the playoffs.

The club is a member of the Southern California Golf Association and is sanctioned to establish SCGA handicaps for members.
