Jim Crandall, Palms to Pines Golf Association handicap chair, provided this report about last Friday’s golf tournament at the Hemet Golf Club.

The regular monthly tournament was held in conjunction with the final match-play playoff for the title of club champion. The start was delayed because of thick fog, which soon dissolved into a bright, sunny fall day.  The fairways were a bit rough but the greens were fast and true.

In the playoffs, Mike Feyder (course handicap 20) beat Pete Capparelli (18) four holes up with three to play. As the club champion, Feyder will represent Palms to Pines in the Southern California Golf Assocation Tournament of Club Champions in December. In the regular stroke-play tourney, Bill Ragland (13) shot a net-68 for first place; John Brower (9) shot a net 71 for second; and a three-way tie for third was between Chuck Alkire (11), Ray Rickards (9) and Feyder (20), all with net 72s.

Brower holed his second shot from about 100 yards out on the par-4 eighth hole for an eagle to win a special prize. The closest-to-the-pin winners on the four par-3s were Alkire on hole four, Feyder on hole seven, and John LoGiudice (18) on holes 14 and 17.

PPGA welcomes new members Don DePalma, David Hiemenz and Rickards.

Points are awarded at each tournament as follows: first place, 6 points; second place, 4 points; third place, 3 points; fourth place, 2 points; fifth place, 1 point. Also, one-half point is awarded to everyone who participates.

The top 8-point finishers of the year go into match-play playoffs for the club championship in August, September and October.

A member has to compete in at least five regular-season tournaments and have a handicap no greater than 24.4 in order to qualify for the playoffs.

The club is a member of the Southern California Golf Association and is sanctioned to establish SCGA handicaps for members.
