A couple of lost dogs were reunited with their humans on this busy holiday, which made for a good weekend. And, the concerns of the young men who found a baby kitty in a woodshed soon became a success story as they found the perfect family to love and care for their little found ball of fur. Good job boys.

Good job boys. IsabellaEvery cattery has to have a “diva,” and ours is Isabella, the calico. An “only child” all of her life, this 3-year-old is wondering how and why she is even in this orphanage. She is a strikingly beautiful creature and her tricolored coat will dazzle you as she cuddles quietly in your lap, as if to say, “Yes, you can pet me.” Her sweet purrs will bring a soothing song to your ears. You will find yourself wanting to just keep petting her soft coat of fur as she relaxes in your arms. Isabella’s wish is that when you are reading this, you will realize she needs to be rescued, and that she will, once again, have her own human (and pillow). LeonardCall him Mr. Mom! Last month, I talked about fire behavior and how its travel and spread can be reduced around your home. We, the fire community, call this area of enhanced protection “Defensible Space.” This week I want to explain how a wildfire spreads to a home or building in its path. Reducing the amount of combustible vegetation…
Greetings from the James Reserve. In the first installment of our column, we introduced the James Reserve and promised further “peeks into the natural world” in future columns. In thinking what this first “peek” should be, I have decided on mountain lions. I decided this because I have studied them for many years and as…

With the drought persisting in our area, a lot of concern, and rightfully so, has arisen regarding the loss of many of our trees. As usual, when we have trees dying, especially after a forest fire, we hear the arguments that these trees need to be cut down so they don’t go to “waste.” When…
