Attendees of the monthly Science Lunch, held at 11:30 Monday, Aug. 1, at the Mile High Café, enjoyed a meal and an interesting talk by Tom Pierce (center, in hat) about his work at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. Leading a team to eliminate electromagnetic interference, Pierce’s most enjoyable project was the Mars rover. With expertise in many areas of science, the group asked insightful questions and then discussed some other hot topics in science. This is her second in a series about a fictional TV journalist who investigates non-violent crimes, discovering interesting things about herself and humanity in general. Members of the Art Alliance of Idyllwild filled the patio around the Higher Grounds Gallery at the Members Mingle on Tuesday, July 26. David The Page supplied the entertainment as the gallery introduced a new show. Gift certificates to Jack Farley’s, donated by Rob Padilla, were awarded to two attendees and there was a silent auction for books donated by Friends of the Idyllwild Library.Photo by Tom Kluzak

On Thursday, July 28, the Lower Fire started around 11 a.m. near Highway 74 about 2 miles east of the U.S. Forest Service’s Cranston Ranger Station. When extinguished, its size was a half-acre and no cause has been identified yet, according to John Miller, the Forest Service’s Public Affairs Office for the San Bernardino National Forest. Cal Fire participated in the call, as well as the local Forest Service units. Helicopters and air tankers also were part of the response, Miller added. Photo by Vic Scavarda

Idyllwild resident Kim Barker (far left) showed numerous photos of very cute orphaned animals and birds at the monthly meeting of the Idyllwild Photographers on Wednesday, July 27. Photographing at wildlife sanctuaries in California, Texas and Oregon gave her an appreciation of the difficulties volunteers face in getting animals back into their native habitats, prompting her to start a charity, BabyWarm, that donates badly needed incubators to wildlife rehabilitators.Photo by Tom Kluzak

Scott and Kimberlee Finnell started “2nd Saturday” in 2013 with the goal of attracting new visitors to the Hill and adding to Idyllwild’s reputation as an art destination. “It was also a way to help local merchants and restaurants, and to publicize the town,” said Scott. The event has grown significantly since debuting in 2013….
