BC: I’m taking a break this week to let Jack Clark comment. You’ve read the grand jury’s account of sworn testimonies it received from present and former IFPD firefighters and EMTs. (TC, July 10, p. 5.) IFPD commissioners read it, too, then unanimously ratified promoting Admin. Capt. Mark LaMont. (TC, July 17, p. 6.)…
65 years ago – 1949 Street lights came to Fern Valley Corners. 60 years ago – 1954 Members of the Riverside Community Settlement Association were the first guests to enjoy the facilities of Camp Lawler, an 80-acre estate given to the county by a Los Angeles attorney. 55 years ago – 1959 Chamber…
Little purrs and four paws up to our youngest kitten, Suki. Didn’t take her long to find her forever home. Miss Sadie is about 3 years old, and is still ready for the old cat-and-mouse game. She loves to gracefully move along, step by step, as you walk. She is not vocal, and is fine…
Editor: I recently received a copy of your article on the Pine Cove Water District budget and standby charges. The article also reported on emailed and public comments made by me regarding the 30th anniversary of standby charges. So you’re called to testify before the grand jury about something you witnessed — saw or heard — regarding an investigation before them. While you’re there, they admonish you that you may not reveal anything that took place while you were at the grand jury, which questions were asked or what responses were given, or…
Editor: How have we gotten to this point? The county grand jury has issued disastrous findings regarding the Idyllwild Fire Protection District. Community members, firefighters and commissioners have been called to give sworn testimony that resulted in this scathing report. We all want a healthy fire department and a strong, efficient ambulance service. What we…
Paws up to you Miss Ethel Mertz. Posing pretty for the picture worked, along with having that smile, cause she wagged her way right into the truck and was off to a new adventure. We love you, Ethel. Archie is learning that relaxing is a good thing to do. He is eager to go for…
A year ago today (Tuesday), July 15 — and it was Monday last year — just before 1:45 p.m., I heard a smoke report in Mountain Center on the scanner in my office. We all were on deadline but that’s when events occur, right? When the timing is bad? Who knew that by the end…
Anyone not a part of a governmental body may invite a governmental body to a meeting without the onus falling on the anyone to follow the body’s rules. The “anyone” in the March case of the IFPD Brown Act violations was Riverside County Fire Chief John Hawkins. In Susan Weisbart’s response to the grand jury…
“O, sunset land! O, sunset land! As on thy highest mount I stand, I look away across the plain, And wonder will it ever rain.” Thus did J.P. Baumgartner, editorializing in the Riverside Daily Press in 1899, paraphrase a familiar gospel hymn. Southern California was suffering through a three-year drought. Only three storage reservoirs existed…
