Highway 74 is open from Idyllwild to Hemet. Earlier this morning, Monday, April 7, the road was temporarily closed in both directions. According Terri Kasinga, Chief, Public and Legislative Affairs, for Caltrans District 8, provided the following information, the abutments constructed in recent weeks at the site, "… held up most of the slide."
Caltrans was able to clean the portion of the slide on the roadway and reopen it to traffic. Emergency work will continue and the slope will be assessed by Caltrans Geologist, Kasinga reported.
The surface earth next to Highway 74, near the Cranston Forest Service Ranger Station, began sliding early this morning. Until Caltrans could assess and evaluation the situation, Highway 74 was closed.
Earlier this morning, Kasinga, Chief, provided the following information,"Caltrans closed SR 74 this morning due to slope failure at Cranston Station east of Hemet until further notice. Idyllwild residents are advised to use SR 243 from I-10 as the detour route. The slope was damaged during the Cottonwood Fire last year."
As more complete details arrive, we will post them.
