As of 7 a.m., Wednesday, Nov. 5, the Riverside County Registrar of Voters Office has announced the results of nearly all the ballots cast durng the 2014 General election. The 265,771 ballots represent about 30 percent registered voters. Slightly more than 18 percent were submitted by mail and another 102,118 ballots were cast at the polls during Election Day.

About 93,000 votes remain to be counted. Of these, 66,000 are vote-by-mail, 19,000 are provisional ballots and 8,000 were damaged in some form. The Registrar office will be counting these today.

In races of local interest, incumbent Democratic Rep. Dr. Raul Ruiz retained his Congressional District 36seat despite the Republican wave throughout the country. He defeated Republican challenger Assemblyman Brian Nestande by about a 6,800 votes. A lead he had essentlally had from when the results of initial vote-by-mail ballots were announced at 8 p.m.

Riverside County 3rd District Supervisor Jeff Stone defeated fellow Republican Bonnie Garcia by 8,000 votes for the State Senate seat. Stone garnered slightly more than 53 percent of the total votes cast. Assemblyman Brian Jones also retained his seat, defeating another Republican handily challenger, Tony Teora, for the 71st State Assembly seat.

For the seat of retiring Hemet School District Director Paul Bakkom, Megan Haley overwhelmed her opponent Maurice Chacon. Haley earned nearly maintains her 73 percent of the total vote.

For the statewide races Riverside County voters supported the Republican candidates by about 54 percent to 46 percent of the vote for Democratic candidates. For example, Neel Kashkari, the Republican gubernatorial candidate had about 19,000 more votes than incumbent Gov. Jerry Brown. But Statewide Brown collected more than 3 million votes, for 58 percent, and defeated Kashkari by nearly 900,000 votes

In the race for Superintendent of Public Instruction, incumbent Tom Torlakson defeated challenger Marshall Tuck. Torlakson had 52 percent of the statewide vote, but Tuck received 53 percent of Riverside County’s vote.
