New Community Center ground-breaking ceremony

The Idyllwild Community Center (ICC) has announced the details of the public ground-breaking ceremony for the new ICC building.

The ceremony will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 12, at the building site immediately to the left of the Idyllwild Community Playground. Supervisor Chuck Washington, among others, will speak at the ceremony, and everyone in the community is invited to attend.

The construction project is funded primarily by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Community Development Block Grant Program and includes significant more funding from Washington, as well as community donations. The temporary project signage posted during construction will display nonprofit ICC’s legal name — San Jacinto Mountain Community Center (as the project name) — as well as Idyllwild Community Center, a “doing business as” of the legal entity, as the sponsor.

The winning bid for project construction came from LM Rasmussen Construction Inc. of Alpine. Local Idyllwild architect Erik Marcussen of Ground Floor Design, Inc. designed the project.

The new building, which has been scaled back from the original plans of several years ago, is a single-story structure that requires no tree removal and very minimal grading. The approximately 2,000-square-foot building will include permanent outdoor and indoor restrooms, a great room, a kitchen with indoor and outdoor access, a ticket booth, a staff office and a large outdoor deck.

ICC also intends for this ceremony to honor the many people in the community who have worked and contributed much to the realization of this project.
