Local volleyball players braved the icy roads and cold temperatures to gather at Buckhorn Camp’s Peace Center where they resumed their 2023-24 season last week.

Idyllwild Brewpub got things heated up really quick Tuesday night as they swept Forest Lumber 3-0. Then followed a firestorm by BBI Construction as they toppled the previously undefeated Idyllwild Garage 3 games to 1.

Idyllwild Garage was back on the court Thursday against Idyllwild Brewpub and this time did not concede to their opponent, as they narrowly squeezed out a 3-2 victory. The Red Kettle fought hard but Village Hardware was the victor in Thursday’s second game with a 3-0 sweep.

Idyllwild Garage still maintains first place in the league standings, but right behind them is red-hot BBI Construction, currently on a four-game winning streak and tied for second place with Village Hardware.

Youth Basketball

ICC’s Youth Basketball Camp has resumed after the long winter break, and the kids were excited to be back. Coach Nick White continued teaching the -7 to 10-year-olds the fundamentals of basketball, while Coach Mike Smith taught the 11- to 14-year-olds the differences between zone defense and man to man. Youth Basketball Camp continues this Wednesday, Jan. 17, from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. in the Idyllwild School gym.

Adult Basketball

The new year brought new developments at the ICC Adult Basketball League, as the high-octane series of half-court basketball resumed last Wednesday.

While undefeated in the 2023 opening portion of the season, first-place Team Grey (Mabery) lost two of their first three games Wednesday. Their first loss was by forfeit (not enough players to start), but their other losses were to Team White (Beagle) who has been on a hot streak to start 2024.

Team White (Beagle) won all three of their games Wednesday, which was enough to propel them to the top and share first place with Team Grey (Mabery).

But how will they fare without their star player Colin Parker who will be out of the country for the rest of the season? Their hopes are that Chris Tanner and Alex Valle will continue to control the boards and have a dominant presence in the paint, while captain Buddy Beagle continues to lead the team to victories.

Also turning things around in 2024 is Team Red (Nunn) who struggled at the start of the season with absent players due to illness, injury, conflicting schedules and newborn babies. But Wednesday was a different story. It was an impressive performance by the dual-threat father-son combo: Brian Kretsinger with the strength and his son Griffin Kretsinger with the speed.

Also having a strong presence in the post was power forward Szymon Bielesz (congratulations on being a dad.) When this team is complete, they are quite a force to be reckoned with. Although currently in fourth place, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see them surge to the top by the time the playoffs begin in February.
