“The Kind of Girl” is the winner of the seventh-annual Rose Metal Press Short Short Chapbook Contest.

The author is Idyllwild Arts Academy teacher Kim Henderson, right, who originally is from New Mexico and is a graduate of the University of Montana’s master of fine arts program.

Henderson’s work has appeared in Tin House, Cutbank, H_NGM_N, River Styx, New South and The Southeast Review, among others.

Judge Deb Olin Unferth chose the contest winner, a collection of 13 stories of 1,000 words or less. “When you sit down to read this lovely set of idiosyncratic meditations and narrations and observations,” said Unferth, “you will find that, from the first sentence, Henderson has her tensions in place.”

Rose Metal Press of Brookline, Mass., is an independent publisher of literary works in hybrid and hard-to-classify genres.
