David Downey, 87, a former resident of Idyllwild and a Presbyterian church elder, died of a stroke Thursday, Jan. 13, 2000, at his home in Oceanside.

Mr. Downey and his wife of 62 years, Helen, had been living in Oceanside for a year after living in Idyllwild from 1991 to 1998.

He was born Jan. 21, 1912, in Brooklyn, N.Y. Mr. Downey worked for Douglas Aircraft in Santa Monica, Convair in San Diego, Dassault-Sud Aviation in New York and United Technologies in Hartford, Conn. He had worked at a variety of jobs from parts manager to sales executive.

The Downeys lived in Rancho Santa Fe from 1976 to 1991. He enjoyed gardening, reading and traveling, and he treasured his family.

Memorial services are planned for 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 21, 2000, at the Village Church, 6225 Paseo Delicias in Rancho Santa Fe. The Rev. Arthur Ihnen of Idyllwild will officiate the service which will include a private scattering at sea.

Besides his wife, Mr. Downey is survived by two daughters, Carolyn L. Schanberger of Los Oso and Barbara A. Capin of Fallbrook; a son, Donald M. Downey of Boulder, Colo.; a sister, Doris Holmes of Los Angeles; a brother, Robert Downey of Hawkins, Texas; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

The family requests that memorial contributions be made to your favorite charity in Mr. Downey’s name.
