Jim Crandall, Palms to Pines handicap chairman, gave this report on last week’s Palms to Pines golf tournament:
Idyllwild’s Palms to Pines Golf Association held its regular monthly tournament on Friday, Sept. 16, at Hemet Golf Club.
The morning was pleasantly cool under cloudy skies. The sun came out later, accompanied by a light breeze. The greens were in good shape, but the fairways had some bad spots. The club opted to lift, clean and place balls in the fairways to avoid hitting from bad lies.
This tourney would have been played in conjunction with the second round of match play playoffs for the title of club champion, but key members were unavailable.
In September, John Brower beat John LoGiudice in one semi-final match. Pete Capparelli will play against the winner of the Gary Leong and Mike Feyder match.
The winners of those matches will face off in a final playoff to determine the club champ. Those matches will be played before the next regular tourney in October. Then, the final match for the club championship will be held. The champ will then play in the Southern California Tournament of Club Champions in December.
In the regular tourney, Bob Stearns (course handicap 20) took first place with a net 67. Robert Priefer (20) came in second with a net 71. Leong (12) and Dan Slattery (18) tied for third with net 75s, and Les Widerynski (14) took fifth place with a net 77.
Priefer won for closest to the pin on the front nine, and Bill Sanborn won for closest to the pin on the back nine. Leong won for longest drive.

Points are awarded at each tournament as follows: first place, 6 points; second place, 4 points; third place, 3 points; fourth place, 2 points; fifth place, 1 point. In addition, one-half point is awarded to everyone who participates.
The club is a member of the Southern California Golf Association and is sanctioned to establish SCGA handicaps for members.
