Like a lot of people, I was fascinated by the almost complete shutdown of Atlanta from 2.3 inches of snow last week. It was a failure of government to manage a threat to public safety, which cost millions of dollars and some people their lives. But the actors were not irresponsible people. They thought they…
65 years ago – 1949 The “Year of the Big Snow” continued; the chapel at Idyllwild Pines collapsed under the load and icicles hung from roofs in solid sheets. 60 years ago – 1954 Several huge crates arrived at the County Park. They contained the prefab makings of a 30-foot observation tower. 55 years ago…
I believe that your self-education on, and then involvement in, the future of Idyllwild Fire’s dispatch services is critical to all of us who reside and visit the Hill communities. The current dispatch service with Riverside County Fire is a superior service and offers a vital skill our rural communities can’t afford to lose. That…
As my late-blooming interest in local history has deepened, I’ve become increasingly impressed with the value of old newspapers. They preserve a contemporary record of people and activities in a locale, and regardless of accuracy or bias they balance our often faulty human memories. Chelsea is looking for her forever home to do her favorite thing … sit on her bed and just look pretty. This senior gal has a gorgeous coat with a tail to match. She is a shepherd-mix, quiet and shy at first. Chelsea loves to go for short walks, have a treat or two and…
Editor: INK Book Gathering. It’s a long and rather cumbersome name, but there is a reason behind it, because it was never designed to be just a bookstore. It was created to be a gathering place; a place for book lovers to gather, to come together and share their love of books; and to tell…
J.P., our news editor, received an unexpected call in December from a man who identified himself as the new captain at the Riverside County Sheriff’s Hemet Station. Capt. Ray Wood told him he was interested in being more proactive in Idyllwild. Subsequently, they set a date and time to meet on the Hill. On Friday…
Editor’s note: The headline is Rollie Atkinson’s own slogan. Atkinson, publisher of the Sonoma West Publishers in Healdsburg, gave the Town Crier permission to reprint this editorial published in the Healdsburg Tribune. I couldn’t have said it better. Did you have your cup of coffee this morning on your way to work? How much did it…
