    Scratch secession, convene constitutional confab

By July 19, 2011 Reading Time: 2 minutes

The state of South California is no longer 3rd District Supervisor Jeff Stone’s highest priority. Although he will spearhead a private effort to bring all 58 of California’s counties and all cities to a confab in Riverside County this fall, the primary objective will be to change California, not divide it. Last Tuesday, July 12,…

Opinion: Signs of the future for recreation

By July 19, 2011 Reading Time: 2 minutes

During this past weekend, you may have noticed three graphically attractive vans moving throughout Idyllwild. Riverside County’s Economic Development Agency’s MARS Program (Mobile Activities Recreation Services) provided shuttle service for this year’s Lemon Lily Festival to help ease both traffic and parking throughout town. As a volunteer and ambassador for the festival, I had the…

    Opinion: Freedom of South California?

By July 19, 2011 Reading Time: 2 minutes

I can sense the frustration in conservative Supervisor Jeff Stone’s idea outlining conservative SoCal counties forming their own state of South California. You got to love him. And after the spanking the GOP received in losing all eight statewide races in an anti-Obama-care year last November, it was remarkable. The GOP tide stopped at the California…

    Opinion: More taxes, fewer services

By July 19, 2011 Reading Time: 1 minute

Try the same services for the same fees. What a concept. We must say no to the perpetual devaluation of our dollar. Every time we add new parcel fees or even double them, we feed the monster called inflation. They would have you believe they want to keep pace with inflation. What a can of…

Lecture explores how Europe savors America

BySally Hedberg July 19, 2011 Reading Time: 3 minutes

What do macaws and chocolate have in common? This was the topic of the lecture by Dr. Patricia Crown, professor of anthropology, University of New Mexico, delivered at the Idyllwild Arts Academy during Native American Arts Week. The Mayans and Aztecs discovered the nutritious and culinary value of the nut from the cacao tree in…

    By July 19, 2011November 5, 2012 Reading Time: 2 minutes

Oh, sweet Bobby McGee, if only you could tell us your story. Were you born with the physical challenges that you bear with such grace and good humor? Did someone literally kick you out into the streets because they couldn’t understand you — or didn’t have the small measure of patience it takes to love you?
