Alla Marshall, 87, died peacefully in her sleep at 5:25 a.m. Thursday, July, 2, 2009, of renal failure at Devonshire Care Center in Hemet.

She was born Aug. 27, 1921, in Harbin, China, to Nicholas Andronick Kabushko, a Russian soldier, and Valeria P. Kabushko, the daughter of Russian aristocrats, who had fled to China during the Russian Revolution. Alla was named in honor of St. Alla.

Her father immigrated to the United States, and when Alla was 4, she and her mother immigrated to join him. Shortly after, her parents divorced. Her father became an architect and her mother became a nurse, working privately for Igor Stravinsky.

Alla grew up in a Russian Orthodox community in Los Angeles and graduated from Hollywood High, where she attended school with Lana Turner and Doris Day.

She led an interesting life in the motion picture industry, in charge of animators for many Saturday morning cartoons, and later sold real estate. She had many Hollywood friends, including Yul Brynner and Rod Steiger, and many Hollywood stories to tell.

She was married three times, the last to John Marshall, a Town Crier cartoonist who died July 3, 2007.

The Marshalls retired to Idyllwild in the early 1980s where they enjoyed a simpler life with close friends they met here, and later delighted in sitting on the deck at Café Aroma visiting with those friends. Alla particularly enjoyed doling out advice, usually unsolicited.

She had a regular Friday hair appointment with Cindy Allert at Idyllwild Beauty Shop for decades.

Informal services are being planned for a later date. Her remains will be scattered according to her desires.

Alla is survived by a son, Steven (Lynn) Beauman of Missouri.

She is preceded in death by her husband and a son, Geoffrey Ivanhoff.
