In the past hour, Riverside County has counted 17,000 more votes. The total ballots counted is 162,594, which is 19 percent of eligible county voters.
No major changes have occured in the county races. Statewide, Proposition 29, the cigarette tax increase, is back-and-forth. As of midnight, the "yes" votes have a 3,000 vote lead, out of more than 2.9 million ballots counted. Riverside County voters are strongly opposed to Proposition 29, but are supporting Proposition 28. The term-limits proposition (28) is still easily headed to victory. The "yes" votes have garnered 63 percnet of the total so far.
Third District Supervisor Jeff Stone has expanded his lead over challenger Joe Scarafone. It's now about 9,400 votes, an increase of 1,000. With about two-thirds of the precincts counted, Stone has 66 percent of the vote. In the First District, incumbent Bob Buster is still leading, but will face a November challenger. At this point, Assemblyman Kevin Jeffries has a 400 vote lead over Mike Soubirous.
Rep. Mary Bono Mack's lead of Democratic challenger Raul Ruiz has stretched to more than 10,000 votes. But this race will be repeated in the fall.
The Assembly District 71 race has not changed in this hour, incumbent Brian Jones is in the lead and his likely challenger in November will be Democrat Patrick Hurley. However, Riverside County voters lean more towards John McLaughlin of Temecula.
Incumbent judges Cameron, Cox and Tranbarger seem to be easily garnering re-election, while Judge Craig Riemer maintains a3,600 vote lead over John Henry, with nearly 136,000 ballots counted (60 percent of the precincts).
