Riverside County Fire Department/CAL FIRE reported at 10:50 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 23 the death of a male hiker on the Ernie Maxwell Trail. Responding personnel performed resuscitation efforts but the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

A Sheriff's Department press release later in the day stated Hemet Station had received a call for assistance about a hiker "passed out and unresponsive on the trail." The release noted CAL FIRE responded to the male's location and discovered he was in full cardiac arrest. Riverside Mountain Rescue Unit responded and assisted with recovery of the deceased hiker.

The County Coroner's office assumed control of the investigation.
