Jim Crandall, Palms to Pines Golf Association handicap chair, reports on the Friday, Sept. 20, golf tournament at the Menifee Lakes Country Club Lakes Course.
The association’s regular monthly tournament was held in conjunction with the second round of match-play playoffs for the Club Champion title.
The morning round was played under a canopy of fog, keeping the temperature mild.
The fog lifted by noon, so the last few holes were played under sunny skies.
In the semi-final playoffs, Pete Capparelli (course handicap 21) squared off again Crandall (10). It was neck-and-neck throughout the round.
Capparelli would go up one hole; then Crandall would bring it back to even.
As play began for the last hole, Capparelli was up one hole. Both golfers parred the hole, resulting in Capparelli winning the match by one hole.
The match between Bill Sanborn and Mike Feyder was postponed because Feyder couldn’t make it.
The duo will face off before the October tourney.
The winner of that match will play Capparelli for the title of Club Champion during the regular October tourney.
The champ will then go on to play in the Southern California Golf Association Tournament of Club Champions in December.
In the regular stroke-play tourney, Dan Slattery (26) shot a net 67 for first place; Capparelli took second with a net 70; Crandall and Gary Brown (14) tied for third with net 72s; and John Brower (9) and Sanborn (26) tied for fifth with net 73s.
The closest-to-the-pin winners on the four par 3s were Crandall on hole three; Les Widerynski (13) on hole eight; Capparelli on hole 13; and Brower on hole 17.
