Jim Crandall, Palms to Pines Golf Association handicap chair, provided this report about the Friday, Aug. 15, golf tournament in conjunction with the first round of playoffs for the club championship. Play was at The Golf Club at Rancho California in Murrietta.

It was a beautiful day and the course was in excellent shape.

The playoffs for club champion consist of stroke play matches between the top eight point finishers of the season. The top seed, John Brower played the eigthth seed, Pete Holzman.

The no. two seed, Pete Capparelli, met the seventh seed, Dan Slattery. The third seed, Bill Ragland, played  sixth-seeded Crandall. And the fourth- and fifth-place finishers, Gary Brown and John LoGiudice faced off.

In the playoffs,  Brower (course handicap 10) shot a net 72 to beat Holzman (15) who shot a net 76. Ragland (16) shot a net 68 to beat Crandall (13) who shot a net 72.

LoGiudice (19) shot a net 74 to beat Brown (13) who shot a net 79. And Capparelli (24) shot a net 79 to beat Slattery (28) who shot a net 86.

In the semi-final pairings for next month, Ragland challenges Brower and Capparelli plays LoGiudice.

In  regular tourney portion of this month’s events, Ragland (16) and Lee Lanfried (25) tied for first place with both shooting net 68s, and Ray Rickards (12) had a net 69 for third place. Fourth place was a three-way tie between Brower (10), Crandall (13) and Scott Schroeder (26) who all finished with net 72s.

The closest-to-the-pin winners on the four par 3 holes were Rickards on hole no. 3, Crandall on holes nos. 6 and 10, and Lanfried on hole no. 16.

Points are awarded at each tournament as follows: first place, 6 points; second place, 4 points; third place, 3 points; fourth place, 2 points; fifth place, 1 point. In addition, one-half point is awarded to everyone who participates.

The top eight-point finishers of the year go into match-play playoffs for the club championship in August, September and October. A member has to compete in at least five regular-season tournaments and have a handicap no greater than 24.4 in order to qualify for the playoffs.

The club is a member of the Southern California Golf Association and is sanctioned to establish SCGA handicaps for members.

    On Thursday the Idyllwild Heating and Cooling Bobcats took on the La Casita Ravens. Mason Dunn played great for the Bobcats as he went after the ball all game and had some awesome kicks. Travis Rocha had one of his best games for the Ravens as he drove the ball down the field the whole game. Also on Thursday the American Legion Hurricanes took on the Café Aroma Galaxy.
