Jim Crandall, Palms to Pines Golf Association handicap chair, provided this report about the Association’s regular monthly tourneys in May and June.

The May tourney was on Friday, May 25, at the Woodhaven Country Club in Palm Desert.

Scott Schroeder (20) shot a net 66 for first place; Pete Capparelli (23) shot a net 69 for second; Dennis Chavez (9) and John King (25) tied for third with net 70s; and Lee Lanfried (26) rounded out the top five with a net 73.

In the B flight, made up of golfers with a handicap index of 24.4 or above as of Oct. 1, 2017, David Hiemenz (36) shot a net 69 for first; Barry Zander (37) was second with a net 72; Chris Kramer (39) shot a net 74 for third; and Jerry Daquila (26) with a net 76 was fourth.

The winners of the closest-to-the-pin contests were Chavez on hole no. 3 and Ken Garelick on hole 6. The other two par 3s were unscathed.

The June tourney was played Friday, June 15 at Morongo Tukwet Canyon Champions links in Beaumont.

It was a warm spring day with a nice cloud cover to keep the heat at bay.

Crandall (course handicap 14) shot a net 70 for first place; Bob Wadlow (17) shot a net 73 for second;  Chavez (10) and Barry Wallace (15) tied for third with net 74s; and Robert Priefer (26) rounded out the top five with a net 77.

In the B flight, Zander (39) took first place with shot a net 71; Daquila (28) shot a net 73 for second; Hiemenz (37) was third shooting a net 80; and Don DePalma (40) shot a net 91 for fourth.

The winners of the closest-to-the-pin contests were   Wallace on hole no. 2, Garelick on hole no. 8; and Zander on no. 17 No one hit the green on the fourth par 3.

The current point standings for the club championship playoffs for the new season, which runs from August  2017 through July 2018, are:

Flight B comprises high handicappers (greater than  24.4 as of Oct. 1) who don’t qualify to compete in the club championships, but participate in the monthly tournaments.

The B Flight will hold its own playoff at the end of the year to determine the B-Flight Club Champion.

Points are awarded at each tournament as follows: first place, 6 points; second place, 4 points; third place, 3 points; fourth place, 2 points; fifth place, 1 point. Also, one-half point is awarded to everyone who participates.

A member has to compete in at least five regular-season tournaments to qualify for the playoffs.

The club is a member of the Southern California Golf Association and is sanctioned to establish SCGA handicaps for members.
