The Town Crier reached out to its readers to ask for tributes to Doug Austin, our Mr. Idyllwild, a man who showered us all with love and kindness, and a passion for literacy. His Dickensian voice and presence emceed many events, particularly the Idyllwild Summer Concert Series and the Tree Lighting Ceremony.
Sadly for them and for us, due to health problems, he and his wife, Pat, recently moved off the Hill, leaving a hole that can never be filled.
Since they still receive the Town Crier, the following words will reach Doug in his new home. (If you missed this week’s deadline to send tributes, we will be printing more the following week so send them to becky@towncrier.com or drop them off under the Town Crier door by 10 a.m. Monday, Nov. 30. Please keep it to 50 words or less.)
Dear Doug:
Just want to let you know what a fine gentleman you are. You lift up the spirits of the Rotary Club and the town of Idyllwild every time you speak. You have made a huge impression on us and we have learned a lot just by observing how you treat all people and the entire community.
We miss you dearly and we plan to rendezvous with you and Pat down in the valley once this COVID19 has passed.
Abrazos con mucho carino, Steve and Jennie
Dear Doug:
Thank you for making me feel so welcome to the theater scene in Idyllwild. You’ve been a constant encouragement and your support of the arts is inspiring. Like they said in “The Wizard of Oz,” one day they should erect a statue to you. Hopefully, dressed as Charles Dickens and holding high a lantern- — a light in the forest.
Always, your friend, Derrik Lewis
Dear Doug:
Your “honorary daughter” (although you are much too young) is going to miss you like crazy. We’ve been through a lot, you and I, but look where we are today, happy and content.
Vern and I wish you and Pat the very best in your next chapter, and I don’t think anyone will ever give me a better introduction than you always did when I would open for the summer concerts.
All the best, Sandii and Vern
Doug:
Thank you for everything you have done for our community. You have been such a gift to everyone who has crossed paths with you, and you will continue to make a difference, no matter where you are. From scholarships for youth, to grants for women through Soroptimist, and everything in between, you are a shining example of how to make a difference in the lives of others.
Personally, I want to thank you for always believing in me. When I took over the jazz festival duties in 2010, there weren’t many people who thought that “just a kid” would be able to handle everything, but you always had my back and believed in me. Thank you.
Big hugs, Theresa Teel
Dear Doug;
We will miss your big spirit, booming voice and open heart.
Mark and Mara
Doug:
We were so sorry to hear you are leaving the Hill. We will miss your presence so much. You always have a kind and generous thing to say. It’s been a pleasure.
Jeff and Barbara Keane
We met Doug and Mary when we were still newcomers in Idyllwild. We cried when Mary left us and rejoiced when Pat came and brought joy back into Doug’s life.
Although life’s trials have kept us apart in recent times, they still have a warm place in our hearts. We will miss them.
Jorgine and Barney Brause
Dear Doug and Pat:
The two of you have been such treasures to this mountain community. You are two of the most generous and giving people in the universe. I will miss all your kind words and glowing compliments that would make me blush and giggle. Flowers and hugs and love to you both.
Diana and Terry Kurr
Sir Doug Austin:
I will always think of you as an elegant, articulate and talented man who graciously and humbly gave encouragement and recognition to youth and adults alike.
You walked into my office at Idyllwild School eager to sponsor a writing contest that spurred intellectual growth and civility among students which became a yearly event. It was so spectacular that it was repeated for years.
Your skills as an actor, exemplified in your daily actions, are a reflection of a bygone era of what it meant to be a humble, intelligent gentleman in the modern era. The contributions you brought to our entire community will be missed. I wish you well as you start a new chapter in your life and envy the community which will benefit from your presence.
Your wit, chivalry and many talents spurred many youth and adults to follow in suit.
Thank you for being a part of Idyllwild School, of my personal life, and of our unique community. You will be missed.
Diane Cardinalli

I thank my friend for all the good he does but more for
being for the man he is: gracious, kind, thoughtful, brave — a sage and a scholar. If you were to raise a boy to become a gentleman you could offer him no finer example than Mr. Doug Austin.
Chris Morse
Our sincere thanks go to Doug for the many years, and the many ways in which he has enriched our community. With apologies to Mayor Max II, Doug gets our vote for Mayor Emeritus of Idyllwild. Our very best wishes go to Doug and Pat.
Dick and Jan Goldberg
When a smile can take you to another place of peace and goodwill, you know you’re with a rare soul. Doug’s good heart beats with kindness and generosity, and his triumphant imagination and wisdom sparkle in his eyes. His legacy will live ever on in our hearts. We miss you.
With love and respect, Ken and Kathy Luber
Dear Doug:
We miss your presence and your presents. You lift everyone’s spirits with your elegant comments. There’s no one else who can do that with such panache.
When this crazy time subsides, we hope to see your smiling face here from time to time. Meanwhile, our best to you.
Much love, Dore and Trish
My Dear Gentle Sir:
You are ever inspiring and unconditional in your praise of others. “You are the butter to my bread, and the breadth to my soul.”
Stay magnificent, my friend and best wishes.
Jackey Queen, Semper Fidelis, USMC
To Doug and Pat:
Who taught us to appreciate life.
Who considered education for the young essential.
Who always had a warm “hello” on his lips.
Who inspired others to do their best.
Who showed love by actions, not just words.
Steve “Bubba” Moulton
Doug Austin:
Your acts of compassion, kindness and generosity have left a venerated legacy on this Hill. My love and gratitude to you and your lovely Pat. “Heaven give you many, many merry days.”
Marsha Kennedy
Doug, my friend:
So sorry to read that health complications now dictate that you leave our beautiful mountains. You certainly contributed to the amiable atmosphere that persists throughout Idyllwild. We all are better off because you moved among us with your wit, theatrical flair, sage advice and almost embarrassing compliments. Peggy joins me in wishing you well.
Ned Roberts
