Jim Crandall, Palms to Pines Golf Association handicap chair, provided this report on the Friday, June 15, golf tournament played at the Red Hawk Golf Club in Temecula.

The cool, cloudy morning gave way to a sunny afternoon. The course was in good shape with tiered greens.

Bill Ragland (course handicap 15) and Bob Stearns (22) tied for first place with net 71s; Gary Leong (16) took third with a net 74; Jim Crandall (11) took fourth with a net 76; and Chuck Alkire (11) and Dan Slattery (26) tied for fifth with net 77s.

Of the closest-to-the-pin contests on the four par 3s, Chris Kramer won on hole no. 4, Stearns won on no. 8, Alkire won on no. 12, and Leong won on no. 17.

The competition will be fierce in next month’s tournament, as players scramble to get into the top eight to qualify for the playoffs for club champion. The match play playoffs are held in August, September and October. The club champion goes on to play in the Southern California Golf Association (SCGA) Tournament of Club Champions in December.

Points are awarded at each tournament as follows: first place, 6 points; second place, 4 points; third place, 3 points; fourth place, 2 points; fifth place, 1 point. In addition, one-half point is awarded to everyone who participates.

The club is a member of the Southern California Golf Association and is sanctioned to establish SCGA handicaps for members.

    Horseshoe tournament champion wins for second year

    Shane Fender, Town Crier Advertising sales representative, took first place at the annual American Legion Post 800 Horseshoe Tournament for the second year in a row.
