Claire Hughes, 79, of Idyllwild, died at 9:30 a.m. Monday, Jan. 14, 2008, at Hemet Valley Medical Center.

Born in 1928, Claire attended the University of California, Los Angeles, and studied dance.

Before moving to Idyllwild in 1973, Claire lived a rich and varied life. But, Idyllwild spoke to her soul. She loved the mountains and the way of life here. As an avid hiker and camper, she could often be found on nearby trails.

She also loved the creative atmosphere in Idyllwild, and was a frequent visitor of Idyllwild Arts, taking advantage of performances and summer classes.

Claire was a potter for more than 25 years and a permanent member of The Courtyard Gallery where her pottery remains on display. She was dearly loved by those who knew her.

Her independent spirit and dedication to her artwork inspired everyone around her.

The Courtyard Gallery will hold a memorial for her at a day yet to be determined. You may appreciate Claire’s wonderful pottery by visiting her Web site at www.courtyardgalleryidyllwild.com.

She is survived by her daughter, Pamela Lance, of Annapolis, Md., and a half-sister, Sophie Marvel, of Lewes, Del.
