Initial thoughts: Before legislators “Man up,” try the truth first …
I try to refrain from speaking out on national political issues. I generate enough controversy when I address local subjects.

I want to run and play and run and play, any day, all the time. Missy, our one-year-old Aussie mix and Reily, our 3-year-old female shepherd mix can be found with their toy in mouth and energy to spare to do just that. But what if our four-legged best fur friends decide to escape their…
65 years ago – 1947 The U.S. Forest Service reported the insect situation had become critical in the Idyllwild area. Warm weather added another hatch of bugs and 750 trees were infected. 60 years ago – 1952 The season’s rainfall totaled 43 inches. • • • Town Crier saluted Denis Evarts Bowman as one of…
About 45 citizens or residents attended Supervisor Stone’s Public Safety Summit last night. In my opinion, it wasn’t a great turnout. He and his staff put a lot of effort into developing the agenda and getting county officials to come to Idyllwild. You can read Marshall’s story here for details on who represented each agency….
It is never too early to prepare. Even though we are just now seeing the end of winter, it is time to start thinking about preparations for potential wildland fires and other disasters. Prior to this winter, we have had three years with either normal or above normal moisture. The winter of 2010-11 was well-above normal. Janis Van Zanten’s letter fascinated me. I appreciate when the authors of letters to the editor do their research and can comment intelligently. I am amazed by the ones that act like gophers and pop up on the rare occasion with no information to back up their fabrications. As a former member of the County…

Here’s my story, I was returning to L.A. about 2 years ago, we had just come into Hemet from Mountain Center after a two-day stay. During that time, we had seen the…
I write this column on Monday evening. Yesterday was Palm Sunday and I regret that I didn’t attend church for the umpteenth year in a row. Getting older makes it easier to justify the action, but the regret remains rooted. But the good news, which does eradicate some regret regarding my diet, comes from the…
Congress has been gearing up for the 2012 elections so no major tax legislation was passed in 2011. The bill passed in December 2010 extended the Bush tax cuts through 2012. You can expect the battles on how to improve our tax code to resume after the fall elections. But several interesting developments on other…
I first got acquainted with the Silver Pines Lodge as an Idyllwild newcomer, when I learned about artifacts unearthed there by two Idyllwild School students, Max Singer, son of the lodge’s owner Chris Singer, and his friend Bobby Righetti. Now, whenever I attend an event there, the meeting room reminds me of its longevity. Extracting…
