Jim Crandall, Palms to Pines Golf Association handicap chair, provided this report about the Friday, Aug. 24, golf tournament at The Country Club at Soboba Springs.

Idyllwild’s Palms to Pines Golf Association held its regular monthly tournament in conjunction with the first round of match-play playoffs for the title of club champion. Twenty-six golfers signed up for the tourney (23 regular members and three guests), marking the largest turnout in months.

The day was bright and not too hot and the course was in excellent shape.

In the playoffs, Bill Sanborn beat Dan Slattery six holes up with five to play. Pete Capparelli beat Gary Brown five holes up with four to play. Crandall beat Les Widerynski one hole up with none to play. And, after finishing 18 holes in a tie, Mike Feyder beat John LoGiudice on the first sudden-death hole.

In the semi-finals to be played next month, Sanborn will face Feyder and Capparelli will square off against Crandall. Once the club champion is determined after the final playoff round in October, the winner will play in the Southern California Golf Association Tournament of Club Champions in December.

In the regular stroke-play tourney, Capparelli (course handicap 21) shot a net 67 for first place; John Brower (10) shot a net 69 for second; Brown (14) and Pete Holzman (16) shot net 70s to tie for third; and Scott Schroeder (21) rounded out the top five with a net 71.

The closest-to-the-pin winners on the four par 3s were Bill Ragland on the fourth hole, Feyder on the eighth hole, Slattery on the 13th hole, and Brower on the 15th hole.

This tourney also marked the beginning of the new season for garnering points toward next year’s playoffs.

Here are first-point standings of the 2013-14 season.
