Brendan Steele came down ill before heading to Mexico last week and considered withdrawing from the OHL Classic at Mayakoba. But he decided to tough it out anyway, hoping antibiotics would help. He traveled to Yucatan, then played in Wednesday’s pro-am and the first two tournament rounds before being cut on Friday.

The native Idyllwilder hit only about 54 percent of fairways, still reaching 69 percent of the greens in regulation. But he needed more than 1.8 putts per green, so couldn’t score well. He finished with a 4-over-par 75-71 — 146 that missed the cut by six.

Brendan has this week off to recuperate.
