Brendan Steele carded 69-70-78-69 — 286 to tie for 56th at the Dell Technologies Championship in Massachusetts last week.

Consistency was a problem for the Idyllwild native: He fired a blazing 5-under-par 31 on the front nine Saturday, then posted a 4-over-par 40 on the same nine the following day in the rain.

Brendan now stands 27th on the FedExCup points list. He needs to do fairly well in next week’s BMW Championship in order to fend off likely charges by the likes of Hudson Swafford, José Garcia, Charles Howell III and Phil Mickelson, who currently are positioned 33rd through 36th on the list — all striving to get in the top 30, since that is what’s needed to advance to the Tour Championship.
