Steele T17 after round 3 at Torrey

On a Saturday moving day that saw the leaders gain little ground on the field, Brendan Steele leaped into a tie for 17th place, five shots off the lead with one round to play

The Idyllwild native notched five birdies against a single bogey on his way to a 4-under-par 68. He drained putts of 9, 11, 14 and 37 feet in the process.

His par-5 13th hole was remarkable for the fact that he drove the ball 299 yards, some 40 yards off the fairway, deep into the right rough. He laid up to the fairway 77 yards from the green, then lifted a wedge to the rear of the severely elevated green, spinning the ball back a good 30 feet to within 9 feet of the hole. He sank the putt for birdie.

Brendan tees off Sunday from No. 1 at 9:05 a.m., playing with his pal Keegan Bradley and Branden Harkins.
