Brendan Steele managed only a 5-over-par 72-75 — 147, Thursday and Friday, missing the cut in The Northern Trust in New Jersey last week by 5.

The native Idyllwilder’s drives found more than 78 percent of the fairways last week, and he hit more than 72 percent of the greens in regulation, but he gave away more than 2 strokes each day to the field in putting. Brendan is now 42nd on the FedExCup points list and 74th in the Official World Golf Ranking.

Brendan will play this week in the second of the four season-ending FedExCup playoff tournaments, the $9 million Dell Technologies Championship played on the TPC Boston course in Norton, Massachusetts. This traditional Labor Day tournament is played Friday through Monday. Brendan tees off Friday at 10:04 a.m. PDT and Saturday at 5:39 a.m. PDT. He plays with Alex Noren and Kevin Kisner both days.

Brendan needs to be only in the top 70 on the FedExCup points list to advance to the third playoff tournament next week, but after that tournament he must have improved into the top 30 for entry into the season finale TOUR Championship.
