After a three-week layoff, Brendan Steele missed the cut at the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open by a single stroke.
That “stroke” came in the form of a one-stroke penalty in a bunker on the 10th fairway on Friday — possibly his clubhead touched the sand as he set up.
The Idyllwild native drove well and he hit a high percentage of the greens in regulation but his putter wasn’t much help.
Hill folk often stop me to talk about Brendan and how he’s doing, who is now in his 12th season on the PGA Tour.
Many of us remember him at a very young age on the soccer field at Valley Wide in Hemet, his parents Kent and Jana Steele at hand.
This week Brendan will try it again in Las Vegas this week in the $9.75-million The CJ Cup @ Shadow Creek on the Shadow Creek Golf Course.
He’ll tee off Thursday at 9:56 a.m. PDT and Friday at 11:02 a.m. PDT playing both days with Keegan Bradley and Tyler Duncan.
