Since the Stay-at-Home Order, home gardens have become more popular. If you want to learn more about composting and vermicomposting, Riverside County Department of Waste Resources offers virtual classes on both these topics.
The department is offering another composting course this Saturday, Nov. 7 at 9 a.m. The vermicomposting class is at 11 a.m. All you need is a computer, tablet or smartphone. Register at www.rcwaste.org/classes.
The classes will teach you “how to recycle organic resources, such as yard trimmings, as well as fruit and vegetable waste into a dark, crumbly, sweet-smelling soil conditioner. The first virtual class will teach residents how compost can be used to enrich the soil in gardens, lawns and house plants. Instead of putting organic waste into the garbage to be hauled to the landfill, learn to compost.”
According to the Department of Waste Resources website, vermicomposting “is a completely different system from backyard composting because it does not use yard waste and is most commonly done in a container which allows for the collection of the leachate. It is neat, easy and odorless when done correctly.”
Compost bins are still available for Riverside County residents for $12 each, limit three per household. The purchase can be made by Visa or MasterCard only by calling 951-486-3200 Tuesdays and Thursdays 8 a.m. to noon. Bins may be picked up curbside at the Riverside County Department of Waste Resources Administrative Office in Moreno Valley.
An on-demand composting class is also available at http://www.rcwaste.org/classes/composting. If you cannot make the Nov. 7 class, another class is scheduled for Nov. 21. An on-demand vermicomposting class is available at http://www.rcwaste.org/classes/vermicomposting. Another vermicomposting class is also scheduled for Nov. 21.
