For a brief period Saturday, Brendan Steele was alone at the top with a two-stroke lead over the field. This was after a sparkling five-birdie 31 on his front nine, but it was nearly leveled by a birdiless 4-over par 39 on the back nine to produce a 1-under-par 31-39 — 70 on the day.

The Idyllwild native is now tied for 22nd at 3 under par, six strokes off the pace.

Brendan’s tee time for round three on Sunday is 8:43 a.m. PDT.
