Brendan Steele teamed with Keegan Bradley to post an 18-under-par 270 last week in the $7.4-million Zurich Classic in New Orleans, earning a tie for fourth place.
The first and third days of the tournament comprised four-ball (better-ball) competition, while the second and fourth days featured foursome (alternate shot) play. The two longtime friends combined for one eagle and 22 birdies against four bogies and one double to finish only two shots off the lead.
Brendan will be taking this week off.
I must correct two mental goofs I made in this column recently — both gently pointed out by Brendan’s superfan and my good friend, André Pilon of Montreal: Brendan and Keegan did team up to win in their 2011 rookie year, but not at the Zurich Classic — it was the Franklin Templeton Shootout. Brendan did win the Valero Texas Open as a rookie — but in 2011, of course, not 2013.
My thanks to André and my apologies to you all.
