Steve Hudson

Steve Hudson, a longtime Idyllwild resident and a staff and faculty member of Idyllwild Arts, passed away on Saturday, July 7. We deeply mourn the loss of a teacher, educator, artist and friend who made innumerable contributions to the lives of everyone around him.

Steve is survived by his three children: Emily Hudson of Homeland, Calif.; Skye Zambrana and her husband Michael, of Idyllwild; Devlin Hudson and his wife Ashley of North Carolina; his sister, Jamie Zamora; and two brothers Chris Hudson and his wife Mary, and Tim Hudson and his wife Lisa; his grandchildren Zoe Crawford, Zach Zambrana, Ava and Emma Hudson; and his partner in love, Jayne Davis.

Steve Hudson received his Bachelor of Arts in English from California State University, Long Beach in 1972. He had been at the Idyllwild Arts Academy since its inception in 1985, teaching a variety of courses, including American Literature, Western Literature, U.S. History, Western History, World Cultures, Mythology, Art History and Graphic Storytelling. He also lectured on the visual arts at Mt. San Jacinto College and College of the Desert. He was the former director of the Krone Museum on the Idyllwild Arts campus. He also developed and presented “The Hand and the Eye,” an arts education program for children and adults. His paintings were exhibited nationally and internationally as well as in private collections. His work can be seen at www.shudsonfineart.com.

A celebration of Steve’s life is scheduled for 8 p.m, Wednesday, July 18 at Café Aroma. Musicians, singers, and readers are invited to contribute to this event.

Additionally, Idyllwild Arts will hold a Tribute to Steve Hudson from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 1 in the Memorial Grove or “Cairns” at Idyllwild Arts. This was one of Steve’s last projects and is a beautiful reminder of the history of the school. We’ll celebrate his life with remembrances, stories and the bagpipe. A reception will follow the ceremony.

Steve touched each and every part of Idyllwild Arts and put his indelible stamp and style upon it. We will miss him.
