Fuels reduction continues along Hwy. 243

Under the direction of Nochella Hunes, forestry assistant for Cal Fire, Bautista crews and Caltrans worked together to remove trees and reduce the volume of other fuels along Highway 243 just south of town recently. Traffic was limited to one lane during their efforts.

Brush fire breaks out on Easter night

At about 10 p.m. Easter night, a 75-foot-by-75-foot vegetation fire in heavy brush broke out on Saunders Meadow Road, south of the Idyllwild Transfer Station. The Idyllwild Fire Department quickly contained it, said Chief Patrick Reitz. The U.S. Forest Service responded to the scene and the two agencies controlled the Saunders Fire. The Forest Service is investigating the cause of the fire.

Rescue of injured PCT hiker

A female Pacific Crest Trailer hiker, Konstanze, 35, of Austria, was hiking with a small group near San Jacinto Peak on Wednesday, March 28, when she slipped and injured her knee. It seemed to be fine, but once they stopped at the emergency hut near the peak, she could no longer move it or put any weight on it.
