Editor: The recent passing of my friends George Kretsinger and Chuck Clayton reminded me that not much has been in print regarding the death last June of another of Idyllwild’s finest people. Even some locals who knew him well did not realize that John Holt passed away in Portland last year. John was a long-time…
Editor: I recently received a bill from Suburban Propane (Fresno) for propane refill. The amount due was $881.64. I went through the procedure for online payment, including registration and completion of credit card information. The final payment screen showed that my amount now due was now $913.14. They added in another $31.50 for “Payment Delivery…
Monday night, a vaguely familiar man behind the restaurant bar fessed up to being a new employee and deferred our orders to a nearby server. His task at hand involved drying dozens of glassware. Within the man’s earshot, Jack mentioned it would not be a good time to fly on an airplane. I commented that…
70 years ago – 1949 Idyllwild experienced 4 feet of snow over a 10-day period in which temperatures never rose above freezing. 65 years ago – 1954 Willard Payne recalled the early days. He and his wife came for camping trips in 1909 when Fern Valley was waist-deep in ferns with only an occasional tree….
By Bobbie Glasheen The closest I will ever come to perfection is when someone (a dear friend, I hope) delivers my eulogy. Can hardly wait. I’ll sit in the front row, nodding and smiling beatifically. Sadie: Guess I’m in charge for the time being, so listen up. Mr. Gray: We’re all here. Sadie: Tex found her forever family!! And she knows them well. Her foster family decided to adopt her, and the ARF humans are crying tears of joy. Mr. Gray: Now that is some of the best news I’ve…
Editor: I’ve been coming to Idyllwild since the mid ’70s and learned a little along the way, having lived here full-time since 2010. And recently, I’ve been seeing some very disturbing trends. Our mountain community is being invaded by snow visitors, many of whom seem to think that public urination and defecation are perfectly acceptable,…
Editor: Anger, fear and outrage are nagging symptoms experienced daily by American voters. Some citizens are currently convinced mayhem and destruction lurk at our border, and reliable media coverage is scarce. Even more believe an autocratic, inhumane leader threatens freedom, safety and the democratic process. Until 2017, a system of checks and balances guaranteed crazy…
Editor: Idyllwild residents need an education in drinking water use on our mountain. There are four types of drinking water: ground, spring, surface and reclaimed water. Groundwater is by far the cleanest, safest and most reliable to drink with two exceptions: shallow surface wells which require excessive chlorination due to contamination taking surface water masquerading…
Hello and happy 2019 from the Idyllwild Association of Realtors. It would be an understatement to say that 2018 was an eventful year. Our community saw everything from the birth and dedication of our new Idypark to the town’s close call with total annihilation by the Cranston Fire — and everything in between (i.e. black…
