Jim Crandall, Palms to Pines Golf Association handicap chair, provided this report about the association’s regular monthly tournament in July.
Idyllwild’s Palms to Pines Golf Association (IPPGA) held its July tournament Friday, July 19 at the Temeku Hills Golf Course in Temecula.
This was the final tournament of the 2018/19 season. The points from this tournament with the totals from the previous tournaments determined the eight players for the playoffs, which will begin in August and continue through September into October. The club champion will be the winner of the playoffs and will then play in the Southern California Tournament of Club Champions in December.
The IPPGA has two flights or levels. Most players compete in the A Flight. The second or B Flight includes the golfers with a handicap index of 24.4 or above as of August 2018.
The top eight players from the B Flight will enter into a separate playoff competition for the B Flight Club Championship. The winner earns bragging rights and a special trophy, but the B Flight Champion’s 2018/19 ends with the playoffs and the 2019/20 season resumes.
In the July tournament, Pete Capparelli (21 handicap) and Bob Wadlow (15 handicap) shot net 71s and tied for first place, securing their top-eight finish for the season.
Tony McLean (19 handicap) took third. There was a tie for fourth. Jim Crandall (14 handicap) and Ken Garelick (21 handicap) finished with a net 75.
For the B Flight players, David Hiemenz (36 handicap) was first with a net 71. Tony Viola (21 handicap) shot a net 77 to finish second. Jerry Daquila (28 handicap) took third with a net 84 and Don DePalma (39 handicap) was fourth with a net 94.
In addition to the overall tournament results, the IPPGA recognizes the players who are able to place their shot close to the pin on the short par-3 holes. This month, the winners of the closest to the pin contests on the four par-3s were Gary Brown on hole no. 3; Danny Crosser landed closest on no. 6; Lee Lanfried was the closest to the pin on the 11th hole; and Jim Crandall’s shot was closest on hole no. 15.
Here are the final 2018/19 point standings for the club championship playoffs for this season, which went from August 2018 through July 2019. The top eight qualify for the club championship.
