Town Hall Soccer
Sports Coordinator Richard Mozeleski gave this report on this season’s soccer games.
Last week the soccer action was just incredible. The 4- to 5-year-old “little tykes,” as was hoped, are now scoring more with their bigger goals, and the fans are having a blast at those crazy games.
In 6- to 8-year-old action, parity seems to be the best description. They are close games that could go either way. Exciting.
With the 9- to 11-year-olds, the Sand Dragons are playing solid team soccer, taking a lead with a 4-0 start. Interestingly, as in the 6- to 8-year-olds, the 9 to 11s are showcasing some future Hamilton and Hemet high school players. In basketball parlance, “gym rats” are the kids you later see surface on local high school teams. Well, in Idyllwild we have “field mice.” You can see them at the field looking for some practice time or pick-up soccer any time the field is free, and coincidently staying out of trouble. No surprise to this writer to see them excelling — the reward for hard work.
The teenagers are playing hard and grabbing all the field time they can get, and it’s neat to see them responding to good coaching from Lance, Jason and Oscar.
So, to wind up this column, it would be negligent not to mention the “Legend” of Idyllwild youth sports, Buddy Beagle. He has come back from a severe game-one ankle injury to play in goal for La Casita, and he responded Saturday by scoring on a shot from his own goal all the way down field, “air mail.” You wouldn’t believe it unless you saw it, and we did with marvel.
Soccer is alive and very well in Idyllwild.
