Sunday, July 24, was a beautiful day to be outside, and Idyllwild runner Bill Whitman went to the beach.

“I had a pretty good race Sunday,” he said modestly.

Whitman participated in the Solana Beach Triathlon along with more than 1,100 other athletes. Overall, he finished 28th. Within his age group (men 45 to 49) he was second and there were 66 runners just in his group.

The race was composed of a quarter-mile ocean swim, a 9-mile bike race along Highway 101 and finished with a 3-mile run also along the highway.
