I received a call last week from a concerned TC reader who said it was unnecessary for us to publish the list of Town Crier Charter Members each week. He wanted to know why we do it, and he felt the space would be more useful if it were devoted to Idyllwild School or local businesses instead.
Well, I explained that we do it because Members need to know how well our Membership model is working so they can consider their future participation in it. We particularly feel we should keep people informed as to the progress of this our first year of the Membership model. And we also hope the publishing of Members’ names will encourage their friends and neighbors to join us.
But now that the initial rush to join our Membership program has tapered off somewhat, we are mainly experiencing current subscribers converting their expiring subscriptions into new Memberships. Now we’re thinking we can cut back on the publishing of the Membership list. So, after this week, we’ll be posting the Membership list only every other week, and perhaps, eventually, only once each month.
Also, we have now invited Idyllwild School to submit a weekly student-written column dedicated to student activities and other topics of interest to students. We hope that column can start in August at the beginning of the next school year, if not this current school year.
As far as businesses go, things are a bit more difficult to arrange. There no longer is an Idyllwild Chamber of Commerce, and a similar business group also has ceased to exist. But we have proposed that the Idyllwild Association of Realtors write a regular column of matters of interest to real property buyers, sellers and realtors themselves. Initial indications are that, after the idea is presented to and accepted by the realtors’ board, we can expect such a column to begin shortly.
So, when our readers speak, we listen. We publish our readers’ letters, whether we share their point of view or not. And for years our readers have participated in our weekly news meetings that are always open to the public. That’s where we decide on the stories we’ll cover for our next issue of the Town Crier. Our next news meeting, after the March 21 meeting, will be Wednesday, March 28 at 8 a.m. in the TC office at 54405 North Circle Drive. Please join us.
