Idyllwild resident Kathy Harmon-Luber is exhibiting her photography “Venice: Whispers” at Artspresso Art Gallery from September through November. Artspresso is hosting a reception from 4 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 27.
Of this new work, Kathy said, “Long before I ever visited Italy — in fact, from the time I was a young child of 5 or 6 — looking at encyclopedia photographs, Venice enchanted me. With every visit, the enchantment grows: The ancient architecture … the gaze of regal, winged lions … enigmatic windows through which, at twilight, the golden light of chandeliers reaches down to the water to dance and play … the mysterious voices carried on the breeze … haunting echoes of Albinoni waft along the canals … the furtive whispers of palazzos and chiesa … Oh, how Venezia whispers to me.
“As a weeklong holiday to Venice in 2011 drew to a close, the seed of an idea for this portfolio of photographs “Venice: Whispers” began to take root in my mind. Since then, I yearned to go back and capture these ‘whispers.’
“In May 2014, I spent 12 glorious and transformative days bringing to life this new body of work. Every image is created in the camera, in natural light, without filters or digital enhancement. They are double exposures of Venice scenes, with a whisper of another image … musical scores, handwriting, brocade patterns, flora and fauna, and more. When paired, they begin to tell a story … in a whisper … of the captivating Serenissima, Venice.”
